Starting out as a first-time filmmaker can be daunting, whether you’re just out of film school or making a career transition. You’ve poured your heart into your script or a finished film—now what? How do you get your work seen? How do you meet industry professionals?

We invite you on Tuesday, June 11 as film industry veteran Joe Pichirallo presents a very practical guide on how to launch careers in the entertainment industry. Based on Pichirallo’s years of experience—including at places such as Fox Searchlight, Focus, and HBO as well as his years as an educator at NYU’s Tisch—he will provide a behind the scenes look at the new talent discovery process.

This event is tailored to beginning filmmakers, recent undergraduate or graduate students, and all those hoping to break into film, TV, and beyond.

Topics in this interactive talk will cover:

  • How to get scripts read or short films viewed: the do’s and don’t’s for getting your work in the right hands, in the right way
  • How to land meetings with industry professionals: use common sense and psychology, and develop a real connection
  • Demystifying the process of networking in the film industry: build relationship that last and make sense for you as a filmmaker
  • How to understand the basic dynamics of the industry: understand your place in the “buyers and sellers” marketplace

Joe Pichirallo is a veteran studio executive, producer, and film educator. He began his film career as a creative executive with HBO Pictures and was one of the original executives hired to set up Fox Searchlight Pictures. He later was an executive VP at Universal's Focus Features. Additionally, he served as the head of the feature film unit for Overbrook Entertainment, actor Will Smith's production company.
