2018 Made in NY Fellowships – Call For Entries

Made in NY Fellowships - To foster diversity in the media and entertainment industry. DEADLINE: Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at 11:59 EST

OPPORTUNITY: The Made in NY Media Center by IFP has partnered up with The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment for its third year of the Made in NY Fellowship program, a program that seeks to foster a diverse media industry, one in which different experiences, perspectives, and cultures are valued. Ten (10) one-year Made in NY Fellowships will be awarded to New York City-based individuals, small businesses, and non-profit organizations in the media and technology sphere that recognize the importance of diversity in the industry. Made in NY Fellows will receive twelve (12) months of Incubator Workspace Membership at the Made in NY Media Center by IFP, mentorship by industry leaders and knowledgeable Made in NY Media Center by IFP staff, as well as access to classes, networking events, facility amenities, and more.   

The Made in NY Media Center by IFP was developed through a unique partnership between Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP), The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, and the New York City Economic Development Corporation. The Made in NY Media Center by IFP is a collaborative workspace and community where storytellers from media and technology backgrounds come together to create, collaborate, and connect. Since opening its doors in 2013, the Made in NY Media Center by IFP has hosted more than 100 classes and 350 events serving more than 25,000 people in its classrooms, media arts gallery, theater, incubator and community workspaces.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: October 26 – November 15, 2017 

PROJECT TIMEFRAME: December 5, 2017 – November 30,  2018  

SHORTLISTED CANDIDATES ANNOUNCED: November 17, 2017  (candidates chosen at this stage will be invited for a panel presentation to the selection committee) 



ACCEPTANCE DEADLINE: December 1, 2017 


  • All applications must be typed and submitted electronically via the Made in NY Media Center by IFP website.
  • Email proof of residency (copy of license, ID card, utility bill, rental agreement, or registered NYS 501c3) to Courtney Potts, Community Engagement Manager,

  • Projects MUST be in the media and technology industries, including but not limited to: animation, augmented reality (AR), documentary filmmaking, gaming, media entrepreneurs and innovation, motion capture (3D interactive), multi-disciplinary, projects across platforms, narrative filmmaking, post-production, or virtual reality (VR). 
  • Individuals MUST be a New York City resident at time of the award 
  • Non-Profit Organizations MUST be a registered 501c3 with principal place of business in New York 
  • Companies MUST have principal place of business in New York City 
  • The Majority of the project or company team MUST be New York City-based 
  • All fellows are required to adhere to a contract during the grant cycle with the Made in NY Media Center by IFP, which outlines the terms of their fellowship. Please note that the Media Center will include provisions that allow for cancellation of the fellowship for non-compliance 
  • All fellows must print the following credit line in all programs or printed materials describing the funded project: “ This project (_insert name_) is incubating in the Made in NY Media Center by IFP” 
  • All fellows must submit a final report no later than 30 days after completion of the fellowship 


Strength of applications will be judged on the following: 

  • Quality, strength, and novelty of the project 
  • Evidence that the project has potential to be completed during fellowship 
  • Feasibility of the project – fulfillment of estimated time frame and expectations 
  • Professionalism of overall application 
  • Proof of residency 


Made in NY Fellowships are not awarded to the following 

  • Public school districts and their affiliates 
  • Public Universities and/or Colleges 
  • New York State Agencies, departments and municipalities 
  • Companies that are not New York City- based 
  • Companies whose primary place of business is not in New York City 
  • Majority of the project team that is not New York City- based 
  • Individuals that are not New York City residents at the time of the fellowship award
