Light Year 11: Decomposition and Transcendence

Decomposition and Transcendence is a multi-artist collaborative video art + sound show exploring the continuum of beauty, decay, transformation, and rebirth.

As with any system, any given point justifies its opposite. There is no ideal without irony, and “Decomposition and Transcendence” exists between these two poles.

The stuff that balances this system: decay, age, transcendence, re-composition, rebirth, and ripening are key terms behind Decomposition and Transcendence.  Artists with a broad array of perspectives and experience—fashion, digital animation, pure and popular arts, noise, EDM, and classical music — explore this continuum and articulate new visual and sonic languages.

Natural and cosmic states are considered, but Decomposition and Transcendence emphasizes the human figure as a device to create analogous narratives and meanings.

LIGHT YEAR is a year-long project presented by 3_Search (Leo Kuelbs Collection, Glowing Bulbs and John Ensor Parker) in collaboration with the DUMBO Improvement District and the NYC DOT.  Originally created in celebration of the United Nations’ declaration of 2015 as the Year of Light and Light Art, LIGHT YEAR has hosted the work of over 100 artists and curators from around the world.

Since 2010, 3_Search, NYC DOT and the DUMBO BID have collaborated in presenting video work and projections on the Manhattan Bridge.  An exercise that has evolved in concert with DUMBO’s emergence has an internationally recognized home for new media arts and business.
